Is this a cotton gauze filter like a K&N?

No. It uses industrial-duty textile filter media, not cotton gauze or paper. That is the reason it holds back more dust than gauze filters while still flowing comparable air.

Does it need to be oiled?

No. The textile media does not use the oiled-gauze approach, so there is no re-oiling step and no risk of over-oiling contaminating a sensor.

Will this actually add horsepower?

It flows as well as the leading competitor filters, so you will see the airflow benefit over a dirty or restrictive paper element. We would frame the real gain as engine longevity, better filtration in dusty conditions is worth more over the life of the machine than a small peak power number.
