CFMOTO Coolant Change & OAT Coolant Spec

OAT Only, and It Matters

CFMOTO uses Organic Acid Technology coolant in every liquid-cooled engine it builds, and the manuals are unusually blunt about not mixing it with inorganic IAT coolant. This is not brand protection. OAT and IAT use fundamentally different corrosion inhibitor chemistries, and when you combine them the additives can drop out of solution and form a gel that blocks radiator passages and heater cores. The failure does not show up the day you top it up. It shows up as an overheat six months later on a hot climb with a load in the bed.

The practical rule: find out what is in the machine before you add anything. If you inherited a used CFMOTO and the coolant is bright green rather than the OAT colour, do a full flush and refill rather than topping up. If you are topping up in the field and only have distilled water, water alone is a far better choice than the wrong coolant.

Mix Ratio

Fifty percent coolant and fifty percent distilled water, on every model in the range. Distilled matters — tap water carries minerals that scale up the cooling passages and undermine the inhibitor package. A gallon of distilled water costs about a dollar. Use it.

Pre-mixed 50/50 OAT coolant is fine and saves a step, just check that it says pre-diluted rather than concentrate before you pour it in neat.

The spread is large — a CForce 600 takes under a gallon of mixed coolant and a U10 Pro Highland takes over two. Buy for your machine.

Interval and What "Inspect" Means

CFMOTO puts the cooling system on a 50 hour, 6 month, or 500 mile inspection interval, with a pressure test yearly. Inspection is not just looking at the reservoir. It means testing coolant strength with a refractometer or hydrometer, checking the hoses for swelling and chafing where they pass the frame, and looking at the radiator core for mud packed into the fins.

That last one is the biggest real-world killer of CFMOTO cooling performance. A radiator caked with dried mud has a fraction of its rated capacity, and no amount of fresh coolant fixes it. Hose it out gently from the engine side, low pressure only, because a pressure washer held close will flatten the fins and make the problem permanent.

Signs Your Coolant Needs Attention

  • Temperature climbing on hills or under load when it did not used to
  • Coolant that looks rusty, muddy, or has bits floating in it
  • A reservoir that keeps dropping with no visible external leak — suspect a head gasket or an internal leak
  • Sweet smell after shutdown, which usually means a weeping hose or radiator seam
  • Gel or sludge in the reservoir, which is the signature of mixed OAT and IAT coolant

Overheating on these machines is often a CVT problem rather than a cooling problem, because a slipping belt dumps a lot of heat into the engine bay. If temperatures climbed at the same time the machine started feeling sluggish, look at the belt and the CVT intake screen before you condemn the radiator.
